NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — You've likely seen signs in yards with uplifting messages as people are finding simple ways to connect. A business in Nicholasville that makes trophies, award plaques and even street signs has switched gears big time, to fill a new need.

Carrie McDanald, owner of KY Awards and Signs, was planning to be focused on producing a lot of trophies for spring sports and plaques for end-of-the-year school awards. Instead, business came to a halt.

“I’m usually swamped, and I went for 10 days without a phone call, or an email, and I thought, 'Oh my goodness, I’ve never experienced anything like this before,'" McDanald said.

She knew she couldn't just wait, or simply produce nothing. So KY Awards and Signs is making something different.

“I have been watching Gov. Beshear every night, and I’ve been inspired by him saying, ‘We will get through this together,’ and decided to put that on a yard sign. We did that, and my daughter thought it would be nice to have one with a rainbow and #TeamKentucky," McDanald said.

She's now designed seven different signs and connected with customers through Facebook. Now, she is busy again.

“I just started this Sunday, and it immediately took off. I’ve not even put the signs on my website yet. People have loved them," said McDanald.

She can ship signs or place them in people's yards for them. McDanald is donating a portion of each sale to the Governor's Team Kentucky Fund, hoping her small business can make a big impact.
