LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Flowers can brighten up any occasion, and Mother's Day is this weekend. Bella Blooms Florist in Stonewall Shopping Center is busy taking orders and getting arrangements together for what's always a big weekend.

"We just got a big shipment of peonies in. I can't wait to get those out," says owner Susan Otero, "We have plants, gift baskets, planter baskets, fresh-cut arrangements, chimes, lanterns, all kinds of goodies."

Otero turned her love for floral design into a business about ten years ago.

"We try to make everything special for every person," she says.

An odd year for florists, as proms didn't happen, and graduations, weddings, and even funerals are off right now. Otero sees more orders of a different kind.

"On the flip side, a lot of people are sending flowers to family in nursing homes and assisted living," says Otero.

Bella Blooms is doing safe deliveries or curbside pickup. And the florist is randomly including homemade face masks with orders. Otero says much of their business is done over the phone or internet, but she does miss the in-person traffic.

"I miss seeing our customers because it's like a neighborhood business," says Otero.

To get a little bit of that neighborhood feel back for a couple of days, Bella Blooms is going to set up a flower mart in front of their store Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9.

"There will be dish gardens, and baskets of flowers, and fresh cuts, and bouquets," Otero says.

So, people can drive up and pick up flowers, just in time to brighten Mother's Day or make any occasion a little more special.
