You knew something had to give eventually. The pre-summer heat wave wasn’t looking to last forever. The heat dome that has been keeping us hot and mostly dry over the past week is breaking down. This means it won’t be quite as warm, but also that unsettled weather will have an easier time moving into the Commonwealth.

Scattered strong and severe thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon, especially for the Bluegrass and northern Kentucky. Damaging winds and large hail will be the top threats. This round of storms will diminish after sunset. We’ll hit the reset button overnight. Additional rounds of showers and storms will fire throughout the day tomorrow. This unsettled stretch will wrap up Friday as a low pushes east through the Ohio Valley.
