Sting, 68, and Trudie Styler, 66, celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on August 20. They have been together for 38 years, finally getting married in Wiltshire, England in 1992 after a ten-year relationship.
The couple has survived challenges to their bond caused by fame, along with all the normal ups and downs of married life. According to Haute Living, the two are now spending the COVID-19 lockdown inside their Italian estate, located just south of Florence. Every year, they spend several uninterrupted days celebrating their anniversary — and we imagine this year is no exception.
They have now shared some of their relationship secrets in Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue’s New York Times bestselling book, “What Makes a Marriage Last,” which was published in May and is now available on Amazon.
They Knew It Was Love At First Sight
“The moment I clapped eyes on her, I just knew who she was instantly. I felt as if we had always known each other,” Sting told the book’s authors of the moment he met film producer Styler (his then neighbor) in the 1980s. However, they were both with other partners at the time.
“It was difficult at first, because it wasn’t in either of our plans to meet someone new who would change the course of our lives,” Sting said.
Styler said, “It was the least ideal situation you can imagine.”
“A tidal wave,” Sting added.
They Share A Strong Friendship
But despite the rocky start, they now have one of the longest-lasting celebrity marriages. A big part of this is an enduring physical attraction.
“We still have a pretty intense sexual charge between us,” said Sting.
But equally important is a strong friendship and trust, something they share not only with each other but with all of their adult children. They have two daughters, Mickey and Eliot, and two sons, Jake and Giacomo. Sting also has a son, Joseph, and a daughter, Fuchsia Kate, from his first marriage. All bear the surname of Sumner, as Sting’s real name is Gordon Sumner.
“Friendship needs to be part of the discussion about the longevity of a marriage or relationship,” Styler told Donahue and Thomas for the book.
They Broke Free From Toxic Patterns In Their Parents’ Relationships
The couple are also proof that you don’t have to repeat the patterns of the past. For instance, they pride themselves on having good communication skills — something that wasn’t modeled to them during their childhoods.
“There wasn’t much space in my parents’ lives for being in love in a romantic sense,” Styler said, while Sting revealed that his parents were argumentative.
“Trudie and I can disagree about things — not hugely important things — but we will have a conversation rather than an argument,” Sting said. “It’s a daily negotiation, sort of like a treaty. And I don’t lose my temper.”
Congratulations to the long-term lovebirds!
