(LEX 18) – The Southeastern Conference announced that it will lift a stadium-wide alcohol ban at athletic events.

The new policy requires any SEC institution choosing to permit alcohol sales at athletic events to establish policies governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages consistent with requirements established and agreed to by the Conference membership.

In the past, SEC athletics programs have been prohibited from selling alcohol in public areas of SEC athletics venues.

UK President Eli Capilouto released a statement, “The SEC has taken the right approach to this important issue by deferring to the individual, member institutions to make decisions about what is in the best interests of each university, their programs, and their fans. Led by Director Barnhart, UK will take the next several months to consider this issue. We will, as always, seek to do what is right for the University, our student-athletes, and the experience and safety of our fans.”
