(LEX 18) – Richard Pitino led the Minnesota Gophers to a victory over his father’s former team in the first round of NCAA play.

The Gophers beat the Cardinals 86-76. It’s a well-known fact that Richard’s father Rick was fired from his position after several NCAA scandals and is currently embroiled in a multi-million dollar lawsuit with the University.

Richard was also an assistant coach at UofL.

Xavier’s Chris Mack was appointed to fill the elder Pitino’s spot at the school.

Richard Pitino acknowledged the awkwardness of the matchup but kept his focus on the game.

“It’s a hard tournament to go to, only 19 percent of our college basketball teams get to go to it. So you never are going to hear me ever complain about anything that we play,” Pitino said to reporters during a press conference.

The Gophers came out swinging early with three-pointers and took an early lead. Louisville was never able to catch up.
