LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the second time Lexington Christian has lost a State Football Championship game to Beechwood. This time the Eagles had a difficult one point loss in overtime, 24-23.
Beechwood jumped out to a 14-3 lead at the half but that's when LCA turned up the offense. Just :51 into the second half, Xavier Brown took off on a 52 yard touchdown run to cut the Eagles deficit to 14-10.
After making another stop, the Eagles would go through a 12 play, 47 yard drive and Drew Nieves would cap it off with a seven yard quarterback keepter to put LCA in front 17-14. It stayed that way until 2:09 left in the game when Beechwood's Colin Graman hit a 35 yard field goal to tie the game.
It appeared it was headed to overtime when LCA's drive gave it a shot at a game-winner in the final seconds. However, Andrew Dobbs 44 yard field goal hit the left upright and the bottom of the cross bar and fell short and the game then did head to overtime.
Beechwood got the first shot and quickly scored on a Cameron Hergott pass to Torin Oshea from 10 yards out to take a 24-17 lead.
LCA got it's shot and Xavier Brown scored again on a three yard run to get the Eagles within one. He finished the game with 139 yards on 15 carries with the two scores. All they needed was the extra point to go to another overtime but it was blocked by Beechwood as the Tigers would hold on to win 24-23 in overtime.
It was Beechwoods 15th overall title and fourth in the last five years.
