Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women’s basketball team set a new record for three-pointers made in a game in Wednesday night’s 90-60 victory over the Mount St. Joseph University Lions at the Beck Center.
The Pioneers knocked down 17 three-pointers in the offensively dominant victory, breaking their previous record of 16 triples, a mark reached multiple times over the past three seasons.
Junior forward Shelby Boyle led the record-breaking effort, scoring a game-high 20 points and sinking a game-best five three-pointers on 5 for 9 shooting from outside. Boyle packed the stat sheet once again with six rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals.
Senior guards Celia Kline and Macey Ford each provided three triples apiece to join in the record-setting performance; each finished with nine points on Wednesday.
Sophomore guard Zenoviah Walker had a monster night with 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, while shooting 3 for 5 from behind the arc.
The Pioneers signaled a night of things to come in the first quarter, roaring to a 29-16 over the Lions and sinking of 7 of 11 three-point attempts. Transylvania opened up the night shooting 69 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes of play.
The pressure continued in the second quarter as the Pioneers scored 31 points on the way to their highest-scoring first half of the season, grabbing a 60-31 lead against the Lions as they knocked down a total of 13 three-pointers in the first half. Boyle scored 11 points in the second quarter while Walker had 10 points to aid the Pioneers in putting the game out of reach by halftime.
Transylvania outscored Mount St. Joseph 30-29 in the second half to improve to 8-0 at home for the 2018-19 season.
Junior guard Ashton Woodard was the other double-digit scorer on the night for the Pioneers, adding 15 points, three rebounds, and four assists on 6 for 9 shooting from the floor.
The Pioneers assisted on 27 of their 32 field goals while the Lions finished the night with 15 assists and shot 38 percent from the field.
Wednesday’s lopsided victory also marked the fourth time this season in which the Pioneers have defeated an opponent by 30 points or more. Transylvania improved to 12-2 on the season and 6-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 3-4 in conference play and 8-6 overall.
Transylvania returns to action this Saturday, January 12 as the Pioneers welcome conference opponent Manchester University to Lexington. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center.
