KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Kenton County woman has been faced with a federal indictment after being accused of stealing $159,000 from her grandmother.
Melissa Lynn Phelps was serving as her grandmother's caretaker when prosecutors said she obtained account numbers for her grandmother's bank and investment accounts.
From there Phelps allegedly made 32 withdrawals in amounts ranging from $365 to $35,000.
She has now been charged with 32 counts of bank fraud and 32 counts of aggravated identity theft.
Each bank fraud charge is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and the identity theft charges are punishable by two years each.
Phelps has been scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
