RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18) — Investigators in Madison County say Tito and Shannon Felix kept their adult daughter caged and malnourished.
Tuesday morning, Shannon Felix pled guilty to charges against her.
Before Shannon Felix was taken away in handcuffs, the judge told her that the 10 years behind bars would be a good amount of time for her to think about the crimes she's accused of committing.
Shannon and Tito Felix were arrested in June of 2018, initially for unlawful imprisonment. A few months later, Tito was charged with vulnerable victim incest (victim under the age of 18), incest and sexual abuse. In the summer of 2018, Shannon told police that the victim suffers "fetal alcohol syndrome" and would get up at night. So, the couple put the teenager's bed in a wooden, locked, caged so the couple could "get some sleep." Investigators say the wooden cage has two bolt latches on the outside, along with a lock on the bedroom door.
Shannon faced a judge Tuesday morning and will spend the next 10 years in prison, starting today.
"Pretty good amount of time to think about it," retired special judge Jeff Walson said during the sentencing.
"Hopefully you'll never be in the position to facilitate this kind of thing again."
Her husband, Tito, was not in court because he is undergoing sex offender evaluation.
