LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A group of Leestown Middle School students needs the public’s help to pack 80K meals for people in need in Lexington.

Right now, they are about $10,000 short of their $25,000 goal - which has to be met by this upcoming Tuesday.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 Kentuckians face hunger, totaling 579,000 people.

“Lexington like many cities has a population below the poverty line and needs services like Gods Pantry to have a warm meal on their plate for dinner,” said teacher Hannah Shoulders.

She says they plan to pack the meals, which come from Meals of Hope, for God’s Pantry.

The two student groups involved at the school are FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) and Beta Club.

Finley Paul, an 8th grader, said her recently-passed grandfather was a successful cattle farmer.

“He was really passionate about giving back and growing our community," Paul said. “So I think this would mean a lot to him.”

It’s the reason she’s so passionate about it today.

Shoulders said they hope to instill values in students that go beyond general acts of kindness.

They're hoping to reach that goal by next Tuesday, and to do that, they're asking for help. You can do that by donating here.
