Armed man on bridge who caused I-75 closure taken to hospital with serious injuries

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police reported that the armed man who claimed that he may harm himself on the bridge was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after he discharged his firearm, striking himself on Monday.

LPD said no officers fired their weapons during the incident.

As of 3:50 p.m., Bryan Station Road is still closed at the overpass. Police encourage drivers to avoid the area.

UPDATE: Monday, June 24 at 2:50 p.m.

Lexington police declared that there is not an active threat as of 2:50 p.m. on Monday, however, Bryan Station Road is stilled closed while I-75 has reopened after police reported that an armed person fired shots on the bridge.

UPDATE: Monday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m.

Officials reported that I-75 has reopened in both direction, however, Bryan Station Road at the overpass is still closed on Monday as personnel work to negotiate with an armed individual who fired shots on the bridge.

At around 9:45 a.m. on Monday morning, officers reported to I-75 at Winchester Road for an armed individual on the bridge who claimed that he may harm himself. Police reportedly had to stop traffic on I-75 and Bryan Street as they worked to de-escalate the situation.

Lexington Police Department confirmed the following alternate routes available for drivers:

  • Northbound I-75 is shut down at Winchester Rd. A detour is in place to take motorists to New Circle Rd and then North Broadway, where they can renter I-75 at exit 113. 
  • Southbound I-75 is shut down at North Broadway. A detour is in place to take motorists from North Broadway to New Circle, where they can renter I-75 at exit 110.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the area.

An "active police scene" on Monday morning has closed down north and southbound 1-75 at Winchester Road and the I-64 ramp at the interchange with northbound I-75, according to Lexington Police on social media.

Police noted to expect delays and asked drivers to avoid the area, and consider taking an alternative route.
