GEORGETOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) — Friday was a big day for soccer in Scott County when the Georgetown Football Club announced a building fund that honors one of its longest and most influential supporters, who recently lost her battle with cancer.

The club established the Sonya Ducett Building Fund for the Lisle Road Soccer Complex. Ducett helped build the program into what it is today.

It currently draws players from 12 different counties and more than 1,000 children play soccer at the Georgetown Football Club.

All proceeds from the fund will be used to construct a building for restrooms, concessions, office and storage space.

On Friday, Ducett's family donated a check to the building fund to kick off the fundraising.

Before her illness, Ducett was involved in all aspects of the club. Her husband, Scott, said she coached, fundraised and helped coaches become coaches.

Her husband, Scott, said, "She'd be proud to see they're still building the program, building the infrastructure to make it a larger program for kids."

Every year, 30,000 to 40,000 players attend games at the Lisle Road Soccer Complex. The group, Georgetown Scott County Friends of the Parks, is heading up the fundraising for a new building.

Brian Roach, with GSC Friends of the Parks, said the goal is to have the project complete within two years.

The building will be located at the end of the property behind Lemons Mill Elementary School.
