LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Fayette County Public Schools has prohibited all outside activities for the week due to the heat until 7:30 p.m. each day.
School officials say any outdoor activities after 7:30 p.m. will still need to follow KHSAA heat index guidance.
Recess will still be allowed.
The restrictions have FCPS coaches and athletic directors looking for alternative options.
At Bryan Station High School, head football coach Phillip Hawkins has his team planning to practice early in the morning for the rest of the week before school starts.
"We have some responsibilities as a high school football team to play in games, and sometimes you need to make some adjustments to make that happen," Hawkins said.
Regardless of the time, KHSAA requires schools to follow heat index requirements. For example, at a heat index between 95 and 99, football teams may be required to practice without padding.
Bryan Station principal Eric Hale explained the school is also reducing the number of games being played this week when possible.
"Everybody's been very flexible, and the safety of our students is the priority," he said.
Jessamine County Schools also announced on Monday afternoon that outdoor practices and games will need to take place after 7 p.m. for the rest of the week.
