LONDON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police in London arrested a man Tuesday who they say held officers at bay with a loaded gun to his own head before throwing the weapon toward officers, causing it to discharge.

Authorities arrested 34-year-old Kevin D. Lewis of Barbourville, Ky., after a bizarre incident. Police said they were called out to an area along Kentucky Highway 80 to reports of a shirtless man walking on the roadway and "making obscene gestures."

Police found Lewis at a nearby Red Roof Inn but, they say, he wouldn't talk with them when they approached, then pulled a .38 caliber Derringer pistol from his pocket and held it to his own head while yelling at the officers.

London police said Lewis walked along Melcon Lane toward West Rodgers Parkway as Laurel County Sheriff's officers arrived on the scene.

Lewis walked behind an Arby's, police say, and jumped onto the side of semi-truck. That's when, police, say Lewis "threw the cocked gun onto the roadway causing it to discharge near officers."

No one was injured in the shooting, and police took Lewis into custody.

Lewis was charged with nine counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree fleeing and evading police on foot and resisting arrest. Police also said he was wanted on two outstanding warrants.

Lewis was being held in the Laurel County Detention Center.
