LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A purse was snatched from a car at a Lexington gas station while the victim was just steps away.

“Literally, in the 15-20 seconds that it took her to leave her vehicle at the gas pump, make a quick purchase, come right back, somebody had taken her purse and was gone,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

Minutes after making the theft at the gas station in the Hamburg area, the thief attempted to use the victim’s debit card. That was declined because they didn’t have the pin number. A day after that, someone went to Central Bank off New Circle Road and had forged the woman’s information and tried to cash a check.

Luckily, the tellers saved the day.

“They knew that they were stolen, so they tried to stall the person in there as long as they could,” said Thomas.

She got away, but not before getting caught on surveillance cameras.

Thomas said she has a tattoo on the on the inside of her wrist and her left leg.

“We’re hoping somebody out there might be able to put together the photograph of this woman with those tattoos and give us a call and let us know who she is,” said Thomas.
