LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — One person was taken to a hospital Tuesday morning after crews responded to a house fire on Judy Lane in Lexington.
According to officials, they responded around 6:50 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the home upon arriving on the scene.
Officials say they were able to get inside and knock down the fire, but there was extensive damage.
The people living in the home woke to the smell of something burning inside.
According to officials, one person was transported for smoke inhalation, and six people in total will be displaced due to the fire's damage.
"If it wasn't for my alarm, we would all be dead," Katelynn Stansell, a resident at the home, said.
The house served as a place for sober living. Now, they are at a loss, with nothing left but the clothes they have on.
"We don't know what to do. All of us are in recovery," Stansell said. "So we are all just starting over. What we did have is gone."
Investigators are currently on the scene to find the origin and cause of the fire.
Officials add that the Red Cross has been notified for assistance, but that doesn't change the feeling of having to start over once again.
"We have fought so long and hard to get out of addiction," Lauren Konkle, another resident, said. "After that, it went up in flames. We lost. We lost everything when we are just trying to do better."
