KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A woman is facing charges after authorities said a four-year-old child was found wandering along a Knox County road.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office said in a press release posted to Facebook that a deputy responded to a 9-1-1 call about the child walking alone shortly after midnight on Tuesday. The child was in the company of a social worker and volunteer firefighter when the deputy arrived.

The sheriff's office said he was walking near a railroad track and high water on Highway 11 in Cannon.

The deputy found the child's home on Morris Lane and found there was a nine-year-old child and an elderly man both asleep in the home. The sheriff's office also said a loaded shotgun was found in the floor of a bedroom. The deputy contacted the mother of the child, who said she left the home to give a friend a ride.

Around 1:40 a.m., the sheriff's office said 29-year-old Jennifer Tritt, of Barbourville, returned home and was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and one count of wanton endangerment, second degree.

Tritt was put in the Knox County Detention Center and the children were released to another family members.
