LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The University of Kentucky hosted the Regional Spelling Bee Saturday.

39 competitors from across 81 counties tested their spelling skills. Lauren DeVore, 13, came in first place with the winning word "motet."

DeVore says that preparing for the spelling bee involved studying a list of over 4,000 words. Her older sister Ashley also won the regional spelling bee two years ago.

Winning the competition qualifies DeVore to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

By the way, the word "motet" means a piece of choral music containing sacred text.
