LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — After 66 years in business at its South Limestone location, Two Keys Tavern marks its departure Friday by taking down its signage.
“For hundreds of thousands of loyal UK basketball fans, Two Keys Tavern was the home of the Wildcats' culture,” the tavern’s legal team stated in a release Friday morning. “For many, Two Keys was the heart of the celebrations of championship wins, and as a place to commiserate over season-ending losses. The taking down of the sign marks the final chapter of the locations famed history.”
Two Keys filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this month as a result of bars being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The search is currently underway for a new location for the tavern.
“Our dispute with the landlord and the costs of bringing the location up to code are making impossible for Two Keys to keep operating at the Limestone location," owner Seth Bennett said.
Bennett said the sign, along with the countless pieces of UK sports memorabilia, will be “kept in a safe place” until a new location is found.
The removal of the sign is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.
