LONDON, Ky. (AP) — An apparent road rage incident sparked a fatal shooting in southern Kentucky, officials said.

The drivers of a pickup truck and an SUV exchanged words following an alleged incident Wednesday afternoon along U.S. 25 in Laurel County, a statement from Sheriff John Root said.

Both vehicles pulled off the highway and the driver of the SUV allegedly exited his vehicle leading to a confrontation that resulted in the driver of the pickup truck firing a gun multiple times, the statement said.

Jack Davis, 40, of Barbourville was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled Thursday. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

The SUV had two passengers and the pickup truck had one, authorities said. Deputies have interviewed numerous people and recovered two semiautomatic pistols. When the investigation is completed, it will be presented to a grand jury, Root said.
