MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Madison County family is trying to find a way forward after a devastating fire. Now, they're asking for your help through a GoFundMe.
Everything at their home on Floyd Branch Road seems to be either burned or waterlogged. When the fire happened last week, they woke up to the sounds of dogs barking and kids screaming.
"We were one of those families who thought it would never happen to us," said Allison Witt.
She described how one of their dogs helped to save their children, leading them up a hill - away from danger.
Josh Witt says they have felt a range of emotions, including anger.
“Because it’s everything we built, everything we got is gone.” Witt said. “We worked hard for everything that we have. Now, we have no money - trying to survive just to build back up.”
He knows his kids are suffering the most - with no place to call home. A donation of any size will help them get back on their feet, he said.
He described the toughest part of their ordeal.
“Watching everything get burned up in a matter of minutes. That’s what’s sad. You can have everything in the world and in the blink of an eye it’s gone.”
He showed us the few items they’ve been able to salvage. They include a few photos, small pieces of jewelry, and a sonogram of one of their children.
“This is what matters the most and there’s not much of it,” Josh Witt said. “It’s crazy how the little things you find keep you happy.”
