LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington highlights its diverse food scene with various themed weeks throughout the year, like Burger Week and Crave Taco Week. For the first time, vegan food is in the spotlight.

“We wanted to do something that was good for local restaurants. It's a tough time for them right now,” said Sarabeth Brownrobie, organizer of Lexington Vegan Week.

Brownrobie says she also hopes the special week shows people how much variety there is in vegan dishes.

That feeling is shared by Michael Robinson, owner of Not Your Ordinary Vegan on North Limestone Street.

“All of our menu is vegan. We offer anywhere between whole food, plant-based options to burger and fries,” said Robinson. “With so many different restaurants participating, I think it will really get vegan cuisine introduced to a much bigger population of the community.”

At Bourbon N' Toulouse on Euclid Avenue, jackfruit barbecue sandwiches with beans and rice keep going out the door. General Manager Hurshel Wingate says it's a menu regular along with non-vegan dishes. He says it's good to focus on local spots that offer vegan options, especially during a month when many people become interested.

“It's the first of the year, so a lot of people have new year's resolutions and it's a great way to start as far as eating healthier and eating a less meat-based diet,” said Wingate.
