LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police in Lexington charged a man with murder after a shooting Wednesday evening on the city's southwest side.

Authorities said 58-year-old Terrence Fister was arrested and charged Thursday in the fatal shooting of his neighbor.

The Fayette County Coroner's Office said 37-year-old Robert Cole Smith was pronounced dead late Wednesday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the shooting at the Spanish Trace Villa Apartments on the 2300 block of Harrodsburg Road. This happened around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police earlier said someone tried breaking into an apartment, but the man who lived there went outside and confronted the suspect, who ran away.

Police said Fister opened his door and shot Smith as he was coming down a stairway.

Police initially said Smith's injuries did not appear to be life threatening. A cause of death was not listed on the coroner's news release
