WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A 21-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a Kentucky State Police Trooper.
Police say on Tuesday evening, officers were attempting to locate a fugitive connected to an officer-involved shooting in Knox County. A trooper conducted a traffic stop in the Poplar Creek community of Whitley County.
Authorities said when the trooper approached the vehicle, he saw drugs in plain view and asked the driver to exit the car, which the suspect, 21-year-old Randy Sullivan, refused. Police say Sullivan attempted to drive away, hit the trooper, and dragged him with his vehicle. A trooper then fired shots, and Sullivan was injured. He was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, where he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Kentucky State Police Trooper was not seriously hurt and did not need medical treatment.
Sullivan has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, fleeing or evading police 1st Degree, wanton endangerment 1st Degree, trafficking in a controlled substance 1st Degree, felon in possession of a handgun, and multiple traffic violations. 42-year-old Linda Adams, a passenger in the vehicle, has been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Methamphetamine), and is currently being detained at the Whitley County Detention Center.
Police say this an ongoing investigation led by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team and Post 11.
