STANTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – A 10-year-old girl is dead following a two-vehicle crash in Powell County.

According to deputies, the girl was in a vehicle with her friend and her father. The father was coming up to the intersection of Boone and 213 in Stanton when he hit his breaks before hitting gravel that floodwaters had carried into the roadway.

Unfortunately, the gravel made the car spin out of control and into the path of an oncoming truck.

The ten-year-old girl was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph’s. The girl’s six-year-old friend was airlifted to UK in critical condition.

Two people were also injured in the truck. The girl’s father appears to be okay.

The name of the victim is not yet being released.

The crash occurred on KY 213 near milemarker 8. The roadway will be shut down for an extended period of time to allowed for investigation and cleanup.

A detour has been established at KY 615, Paint Creek Road.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the 6-year-old child as the crash victim’s sister instead of friend.
