Police: DNA Links Man To 2016 Shooting In Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police arrested a man suspected in a 2016 shooting after authorities say DNA evidence linked him to the crime.

Authorities said 25-year-old Timonthy Shelby was being held in the shooting, which happened near the corner of North Limestone and East 7th Street on June 26, 2016.

The victim told police that he was dropped off in the area by an Uber when three men approached him with a handguns.

The victim said his assailants forced him into an alley where they stole his wallet and phone.

According to Shelby’s arrest citation, the victim told police one of the men was holding a gun to his head and acting aggressive. The victim said he feared for his life, so fought for the weapon.

Two suspects ran off, and the victim was shot several times.

The victim, who suffered serious injuries, was able to tear the shirt off his assailant. Police later used the clothing to test for DNA.

A DNA sample later was matched to Shelby, who was charged with first-degree assault and robbery in the case.

He was due back in court Tuesday.
