PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Kentucky State Police officials confirmed Tuesday morning that one the agency’s troopers was injured in an officer-involved shooting Monday night.

Officials with KSP Post 13 said the shooting happened along Hull School Road in the Bonnyman community around 7 p.m.

Police say that a man who exchanged gunfire with Kentucky State Police was killed at the scene.

Troopers were executing a search warrant at a home nearby when they heard gunshots at another home. They dropped what they were doing to follow up on the reason for those shots.

During that time, an officer exchanged gunfire with an assailant, according to KSP.

“Where the shooting took place and where the individuals ran into the residence was completely unrelated to where the search warrant was being executed. It was just same location, but different residences, and different circumstances,” said Trooper Jody Sims.

The injured trooper was taken to Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released. The trooper was shot in the leg. He is expected to recover and have use of his wounded leg.

The name of the trooper has not been released yet. The man involved in the shooting will not be identified until next-of-kin are notified.
