LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – Today an annual statewide tornado drill took place, which is pretty timely considering the tornado outbreak in Alabama over the weekend.

At 10:07 a.m., students at Garrett Morgan Elementary lined the halls for an annual drill. On the minds of teachers was the recent Alabama tornado that killed 23, including several children.

Students quietly burst out of their classrooms. In a matter of seconds, all 757 students were down against a wall.

“Some months are only fire drills, other months we have severe weather, we also practice lockdowns. It’s important to do that, so that our kids are prepared and they know exactly what to do if in a state of emergency,” said Teresa Palmer, a behavior coach at the school.

Teachers say that they hope their students walk out of school today to educate others.
