LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Several people were looking for somewhere to stay after an fire early Sunday morning broke out at a Lexington motel.

Crews were on the scene for hours at the Sportsman Motel on Winchester Road after a fire started in the attic.

Firefighters said the blaze itself was knocked down quickly but crews had to stay to make sure it didn’t rekindle with all the insulation.

It’s not clear how this fire started, but officials said no one was injured.

However, the fire and response damaged 11 of the motel’s units, and at least 22 people were displaced. Officials said they’ve been taken to a nearby hotel.

Crews say fighting a fire in a hotel can be challenging. According to FEMA, in 22 percent of hotel and motel fires, the blaze extends beyond the room of origin.
