Hazard Police Officer Injured During Foot Pursuit

HAZARD, Ky. (EKB News) – A Hazard City Police Officer was injured Thursday while pursuing a suspect.

According to East Kentucky Broadcasting, an officer identified as Keith Gwin responded to reports of a suspicious man on Ky Hwy 15.

As Officer Gwin approached the man, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Smith, officials say a foot pursuit began.

Both Officer Gwin and Smith fell down a hill. Smith continued on while Gwin was unable to continue.

Members of the Perry County Sheriff’s Department arrived to assist and deployed drones and quickly located Smith.

Smith has been charged with fleeing or evading, resisting arrest, wanton endangerment, trafficking controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct among other charges. Smith was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail.
