FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Emergency crews were on the scene Monday morning after a three-vehicle crash killed two people on Interstate Highway 64.
Authorities said the crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-64 near mile marker 55.
Officials said a truck was stopped on a bridge for an unknown reason and a car pulled up beside it and also stopped. That’s when, according to police, a commercial semi was unable to stop and crashed into the vehicles.
Authorities said the drivers of the truck and car were killed. There were no other passengers. The driver of the semi was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Police said two dogs that were inside one of the vehicles that were hit survived.
Authorities said they were trying to determine why the truck was stopped on the bridge and believe it may have been experiencing mechanical problems.
The road has reopened.
