LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Attorney General’s Office has released a Crime Victims’ Information Guide that one survivor hopes will help others deal with trauma.

The guide includes information about the court system, the impact of trauma and services available to victims.

It was created with assistance from the Attorney General’s Survivor’s Council. Brittney Thomas is a member of the council.

“I was at Heath High school,” Thomas said. “I was a freshman and I was in the prayer circle the morning that the shooting happened and I lost a very close friend of mine.”

While she wasn’t injured in the shooting, Thomas said it had a lasting effect on her. But her family wasn’t aware of the services available to her, she said.

That’s where this guide could have helped, she said.

“It would’ve been maybe helpful for my mom to know what services she could’ve gotten for me,” Thomas said.

Now the information is available to everyone online, she said, which will help people who may be afraid to talk to others about their pain.
