PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Multiple fire departments responded Wednesday to a house fire in Science Hill that left a 12-year-old boy dead after he apparently went back into the burning structure for a pet.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. at a home on Keeney Road.

A family member tells LEX 18 that a family of four was in the home at the time.

The father, mother and their 5-year-old daughter made it out of the home safely, but their 12-year-old son ran back into the home to get a dog and didn’t come back out.

The family tells LEX 18 that the boy’s name was Hunter Wesley.

The mother was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Four dogs also were killed and some cats are unaccounted for.

The fire chief says he believes a heating lamp on the back porch may have caused the fire, but they have turned over the investigation to the state fire marshal for an official cause.
