LEXINGTON, KY. (LEX 18) – City crews will be out tonight to treat roadways and prepare for snowfall.
Lexington could receive up to an inch of snow. Supervisors and crew members will come on duty at 10 p.m. and will work until relieved by the day crew Thursday morning. Additional crew members will be called in if needed.
“This event will be preceded by rain, so pretreating is not an option,” says Rob Allen, Streets & Roads Director. “Hopefully precipitation amounts will remain in the inconvenience category and will have little impact upon travel.”
Allen says salt and chemical supplies remain good and that the salt used last weekend is being replaced this week. He also said equipment and staff are in good shape and have no critical areas of concern.
Public safety officials recommend that you:
- Make sure your vehicle is sufficiently winterized – check the battery, antifreeze level, heater, defroster, wipers and windshield washer.
- Dress warmly for the weather – in layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing, in anticipation of unexpected emergencies.
- Try to keep your gas tank at least two-thirds full to prevent fuel line freezing and in preparation for possible lengthy delays on the roadway.
- Make sure your vehicle has an emergency care kit. It should include jumper cables, flares or reflectors, windshield washer fluid, an ice scraper, blankets, nonperishable food, a first aid kit, and traction material.
- Give a wide berth to snow removal equipment.
- Leave plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead.
- Steer into the skid. Stay calm and ease your foot off the gas while carefully steering in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go.
