GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)–Police say that a camera was found in a restroom at Spurlin Funeral Home in Garrard County.

Police say a patron noticed the camera mounted in the men’s restroom last Thursday and immediately reported it to the authorities.

“To my knowledge, it was only in the male restroom,” said Assistant Chief Eric Taylor with the Garrard County Police.

Some residents of Lancaster wanted to know why it was in a restroom.

LEX 18’s Leigh Searcy went to the funeral home and tried reaching out to the owner by phone to ask why the camera was in the restroom.

The owner’s daughter, Jessica Spurlin, was busy meeting with families but told LEX 18 by phone, “My dad was trying to fix a problem and keep the community safe.”

She went on to say that the camera was placed over a sink to try and record suspected drug use by an employee. She admits it was not a good idea.

Some residents stand by the Spurlin family.

“They’re a very nice family. I’m shocked this would be anything other than what they say,” said Robin Noe.

Police are handling the case and say that of the three Spurlin Funeral Homes in the area, the Garrard County location is the only one involved.

“We’re going to look at all the evidence, this is an ongoing investigation and we may be contacting people identified, people found on the video,” said Taylor.

If you think you may have been recorded on the camera, please call Garrard County Police at (859) 792-3023.
