RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18)  A Richmond man is behind bars after allegations that he hit a one-year-old girl in his care. He tells LEX 18 that mental health issues are to blame.

Timothy Winkler, 26, allegedly first told officers that the bruising to the little girl’s face happened when she fell into a door frame.

That explanation was quickly ruled out by doctors who examined the child last month. According to the arrest citation, Winkler admitted to hitting the girl and that he regretted it, but he also blamed the incident on multiple personality disorder and another personality may have taken over.

LEX 18 spoke with Winkler from jail. He declined to go on camera but told reporter Mike Valente that he felt he should be in psychiatric care.

Winkler is charged with first-degree criminal abuse.
