FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a secret shopper scam making its way through the mail.

The office was tipped off to the scheme by an alert resident.

Targets of the scam receive a money order for $1,000.

They are told they can keep $200 after cashing it but must purchase $800 worth of Amazon gift cards and send the numbers on the back to an email address.

The Federal Trade Commission says the money orders are fake and leave victims on the hook for repaying the entire amount.
