LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Most people usually feel safe leaving personal items at their desks at work, but for a woman in Lexington, that was not the case.

“At some point, our suspect gained access to her office and also got under her desk and took her purse,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

Thomas said that the suspect left the Lexington Clinic Office near Richmond Road and went shopping.

He said they got “$200 to $300, and we believe that they’re buying gift cards and we’ve been able to corroborate that. So that’s something they’ll turn around and sell for half the price on the street.”

Police say that they see an uptick in crime around Thanksgiving. While this theft happened in August, the holidays are a time of taking as well as giving.

“There’s desperation for people to buy gifts and have that added financial stress during the holidays,” he said.

Thomas suggests putting your purses in a desk drawer or cabinet.
