PINE KNOT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Officials with the Federal Bureau of Prisons say five staff members at the high-security U.S. Penitentiary McCreary were injured Wednesday afternoon in an attack by inmates.

According to a news release, a group of inmates attacked the staffers about 12:50 p.m. when they responded to a disruption.

“At no time was the public in danger,” according to the statement.

Authorities say the staffers were taken to a local hospital where they were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said “several inmates were treated for minor injuries” at the prison, but did not specify the exact number of injured inmates or describe their conditions.

In the aftermath, inmates were sent back to their cells and the prison “was placed on a limited operational status” or lockdown.

Officials said the FBI was notified and that an internal investigation has been launched.
