FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– A man has pleaded guilty to shooting a former Prestonsburg police officer.

The Floyd County Chronicle and Times reports 31-year-old Robert Powers was set to go on trial this week, but instead, took a plea deal, pleading guilty, and accepting a sentence recommendation from the Commonwealth’s attorney.

Police say Powers ran from a traffic stop back in 2015, then holed up in a home for 10 hours.

When Powers refused to surrender, police say they tased him and he shot Officer Adam Dixon in the chest.

If that recommendation is accepted, powers will serve 20 years in prison.

Formal sentencing is set to be held next month.
