FORT KNOX, Ky. (LEX 18)– Fort Knox will take its entire post “off the grid” Wednesday.

Officials say this is to demonstrate its capability to operate completely independent of external power during a test of its energy security program.

The goal is to ensure all army installations are capable of operating critical missions by providing necessary water and energy for a minimum of two weeks.

Fort Knox is able to convert natural gas, which is extracted from underneath the installation.

The exercise is set to start Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
