LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– The Lexington- Fayette County Health Department tells LEX 18 that there has been a flu-related death in Lexington.

This is the state’s first flu-related death for the 2018-2019 flu season. The health department said that more than 80,000 people died from flu-related causes in the United States last year and 27 of those were in Lexington.

The person who died was in their 60s and had underlying health conditions.  A spokesperson with LFCHD said that there was no record that the individual had received the flu vaccine.

A flu shot is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and above, especially those 65 and older as they’re most at risk for more serious complications from the flu.

The health department is doing a one day only free flu shot event on Oct. 11. That’s from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at their Newtown Pike location.

LEX 18 will update as more information becomes available.
