BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Union couple is facing child abuse charges after police accused them assaulting a 3-year-old boy so badly they thought he had died.

Shane Sasher

Authorities say 34-year-old Shane C. Sasher and 31-year-old Karen E. Spurlock were arrested Friday after an investigation.

Police say officials at St. Elizabeth hospital in Edgewood reported on Tuesday that a 3-year-old had been brought in with facial injuries consistent with abuse, including a cut under one eye that require stitches.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says its investigators determined that the boy is Spurlock’s son and that both had been living with Sasher when the injuries occurred.

Police say the boy was assaulted twice, then given Motrin.

Karen Spurlock

“When Spurlock and Sasher attempted to wake him up the next morning they thought the he was deceased,” a posting on the sheriff’s Facebook page reads.

Police say the pair did not immediately call 911. They later took the child to St. Elizabeth where they reportedly told staff the boy had fallen down stairs.

Spurlock and Sasher are charged with first-degree criminal abuse and second-degree assault.
