LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18)– The University of Kentucky celebrated the opening phase of a new research building Friday.

The building will house multidisciplinary research teams focusing on fire health disparities including cancer, diabetes, obesity, stroke, cardiovascular diseases, and substance abuse.

UK President Eli Capilouto talked about how research conducted in the new building will help extend the lives of people in Kentucky.

“We stand in the atrium of a modern facility that will be that shining beacon of hope, a testament to the idea that we can turn the tide of all this disease and suffering and the calamities that befall not only individuals but their entire family,” said Capilouto.

When the building is complete, it will include six floors of biomedical research laboratories.
