BREATHITT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Kentucky State Police said Monday afternoon that a trooper was shot in the face in a shootout Sunday that left the suspect dead.
Authorities say Sgt. Gary “Scotty” Sandlin was treated and released after being “struck in the face by a gunshot.”
Police say 39-year-old Dwayne Robertson of Jackson was killed in the shootout.
Police responded to a barricade situation along Kentucky Highway 3193. Officials say Robertson spoke with officers briefly before retreating into the home and then firing upon officers.
Police say they also were able to rescue a female from inside the residence.
Officials said Sandlin’s injuries were non-life-threatening and that he was released from the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
The incident remains under investigation.
