HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) – An investigation is underway after a Kentucky State Police trooper fatally shot a suspect early Monday morning in Christian County.

Authorities say the trooper was called out just before 12:30 a.m. to assist Christian County Sheriff’s deputies on a suspicious vehicle call at the intersection of Meacham and Greenville roads.

Officials say the vehicle’s driver was slumped over the wheel, and police discovered the car was reported stolen from Akron, Ohio.

Police say that when the officers tried to extract the man from the vehicle, he began to flee the scene, dragging the troop an undisclosed distance before he was “able to dislodge himself.”

The officers pursued the vehicle, which officials say “for an unknown reason, caught fire and became fully engulfed.”

Officials offered few details about the end of the pursuit except to say “the suspect was fatally shot by the Trooper.”

It says the identity of the dead suspect is not known.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Response Team is investigating the case.
