HAZARD, Ky (LEX 18)– The Hazard Police Department said that a man was charged with attempted murder of a police officer Wednesday, according to their Facebook page.

The post says that shortly after 1 p.m., a Hazard Police Officer was shopping at Tractor Supply on Village Lane when he saw a man, 45-year-old Allen Combs, of Bulan, exit the store without paying for merchandise. The officer, Johnny Begley, notified an employee then left the store and told Combs that he was an officer.

Police say that Combs told Begley, “you’re not taking me anywhere.” While attempting to detain Combs, police say Combs reached into his truck and armed himself with a knife.

They say that Begley used force to disarm Combs and during the struggle, Combs reached inside of his truck and attempted to grab a loaded, sawed-off shotgun.

The officer suffered minor injuries.

The investigation revealed that Combs was a convicted felon and the license plate on his truck had been reported stolen Tuesday. Stolen merchandise from two other businesses was located inside Comb’s truck along with the barrel that had been sawed off the shotgun.

He was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail and charged with robbery 1st, attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, giving an officer false identifying information, and failure to appear (warrant).
