FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) — Franklin County Schools posted on Facebook saying that Hearn Elementary School will be closed again Friday as they address an issue with bats being in the building.

Officials started inspecting the building Wednesday night to make sure that there were no bats in the school building after a rabid bat was found in the neighborhood earlier in the week .

According to post made by Franklin County Schools on Facebook, three dead bats were found inside of the building while the school was closed for inspection Thursday. One of those three bats tested positive for rabies.

Some small holes that bats can fit into, have been filled up as a precaution.

Officials with Franklin County Health Department say the county hasn’t had a rabid bat case since 2006.

The school had previous problems with bats being inside the school in the summer of 2017. Superintendent Mark Kopp said that they had to shut down then to get rid of the bat issue, so that is why they decided to do the same Thursday and Friday.

Kopp said that they do not have any indication that any of the students have come in contact with any bats.

Franklin County Schools said they are looking forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, September 4.
