WINCHESTER, Ky. (LEX 18) — One person is dead after a small fire started in an apartment in Winchester.

The fire happened around 2:30 a.m. on Main Street.

Neighbors said they woke up to see smoke surrounding the apartment. They said one man lived at the residence.

"The fire department ran up and started banging on the door and busting windows,” said Cameron Watkins. “I saw the smoke rolling out. They pulled somebody out and started CPR."

Winchester Fire Chief Cathy Rigney said they don't believe anyone else was inside at the time. Officials spent the morning assessing the damage and interviewing people nearby.

The identity of the victim hasn’t been confirmed as of Monday afternoon.

Watkins said when first responders brought the man out of the apartment, he was badly injured and it was disturbing to see.

"He seemed like a pretty friendly guy," said Watkins. "He didn't deserve what happened to him."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
